The Arizona School of Roofing it a dream or a fantasy?
It's a dream that has to come true!

The roofing industry has been feeding me since I was 12 years old. I helped my great grandfather, Clarence Henry Depew, repair roofs on the properties he owned. I learned roofing hand nailing three-tab, Shasta white shingles. If you remember those days too, you are one of the older ones. I don't say that to be mean. The fact is that our skilled workforce is aging and we are not getting new workers in fast enough to make up for the shortfall. If you are a roofing contractor, you know what I mean. If you are the owner, you might have seen the results of our labor challenges on your buildings. It's not exactly hard to understand why a good roof matters. Especially if your's leaks.
Still, we lack in:
The roof is the most essential component of the building. Literally, without a roof there is no building, and all your stuff will be damaged. By our hot Arizona sun, or a monsoon or a dust storm. Without a roof all you have is a fence (thank you, Jon Goodman, for that one, I told you I was going steal it). In the past, being a roofer was cool, but today it's tough getting young people interested. It is hard work, it is dangerous, and it does take a certain kind of person to do it. All that is true
Roofing is a fantastic industry with so many paths to success in all the segments of the industry. Our industry can take a guy who did not finish high school. And turn that man into a successful roofing contractor. Our industry is the very best place for a young person who is looking at the trades. No other industry offers what we have.
The challenge is getting that message to young people.
That is part of the reason I put up the www.therarizonaroofer.com. In addition to offering articles, resources, a directory, and advertising space. We use the money we do get to help encourage more formal roofing training. If you choose to spend with The Arizona Roofer, you are helping us get the message to the youth.
- One larger manufacturer and I have been working on a plan to recruit in the high schools
- The Arizona Department of Education is working hard on a Trades introduction video to use as school assemblies
- The NRCA and NCCER are developing a roofing specific trades program
- The NRCA has several great programs and more coming
- And more ...
We are living in a time of transformation. Our industry is about to go through some radical changes. I for one and glad for it.
What do you say? Get listed or buy some ad space. I help you with some exposure, and you help me keep pressing forward until the day you see "GRAND OPENING THE ARIZONA SCHOOL OF ROOFING"
